How to measure and report on transport GHG emissions
What’s happened and why?
A new international environmental standard has joined the well-established BS ISO 14000 series. BS EN ISO 14083:2023 details how to quantify and report on GHG emissions arising from transport chain operations for passengers and freight.
What does BS EN ISO 14083:2023 cover?
It provides requirements and guidance for the quantification, assignment, allocation and reporting of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for transport chains for passengers and freight.
It specifies how to source data as inputs for the calculation of GHGs, taking into account that transport operations vary hugely.
It covers all modes of land, water and air transport, includes the operational emissions from transport hubs, and is applicable along the entire transport chain.
Why use BS EN ISO 14083:2023?
The standard can help businesses of any size to:
- Quantify and report their transport chain operation’s GHG emissions credibly and consistently
- Include transport GHG emissions in wider GHG calculations based on other 14000 series standards, e.g. BS ISO 14067 on the carbon footprint of products
- Improve operational efficiency and risk management
- Increase stakeholder confidence and trade more easily
- Grow sustainably
The standard’s use also supports UN Sustainable Development Goals: Goal 9 on industry, innovation and infrastructure, Goal 11 on sustainable cities and communities, Goal 12 on responsible consumption and production, Goal 13 on climate action, Goal 14 on life below water and Goal 15 on life on land.
