Hydrogen testing and certification

Hydrogen fuel offers us cleaner, energy-efficient solutions as we work to decarbonize our gas network and wider lifestyles across the globe. The UK Government is committed to reaching net-zero emissions by 2050 and is looking to the promising role hydrogen can play in the transition to cleaner energy. With the flexibility of hydrogen, we can realize the revolutionary potential for zero-emission fuel for heating, hot water, and cooking in both commercial and domestic settings.

UK development of hydrogen distribution and use in buildings is advanced, with BSI taking the lead in hydrogen testing and certification. We can offer this expertise to organizations operating in various markets globally.

BSI’s testing and certification services can help current manufacturers of both gas-burning commercial and domestic appliances, such as boilers, cookers, heaters, etc., who are looking to start supplying appliances for use with hydrogen fuel. These appliances can be tested to meet UK Government guidelines of stage 1 – Admixture of methane/hydrogen (80%/20%) and stage 2 – mix up to >98% hydrogen.

BSI’s experts can guide your organization on safe hydrogen gas burning, and our testing capabilities test a range of appliances that burn hydrogen gas, from small household products to larger commercial appliances. BSI is currently supporting UK Government lead projects that are piloting and developing hydrogen use in buildings, through testing and certification of products within these projects.

BSI is able to provide testing and certification solutions, even where formal product standards are not yet available. Our testing services at BSI can help clients with their hydrogen gas-burning product development through type-testing to ensure final products meet requirements. A full range of independent product testing and assessment services are available to achieve certification.

We can test appliances used for:

• space heating;
• cooking;
• water heating;
• refrigeration;
• lighting; and
• washing.

We also test the supply of forced-draught hydrogen gas burners, along with safety and control devices that are intended to be used within appliances.

• Gas-burning appliances using >98% of hydrogen including guidelines included in PAS 4444
• Gas-carrying fittings for use with hydrogen (including gas distribution components, and fittings used in buildings
• Control devices and ancillaries for hydrogen

BSI has introduced new hydrogen certification services that cover the gas supply chain from distribution through to end-use.

Examples of hydrogen certification offered by BSI include UKCA GAR, CE GAR, and Kitemark (fittings, domestic, commercial appliances), allowing for hydrogen fuel products to be placed on the market in both Europe and Great Britain. BSI also offers its Kitemark scheme for gas fittings in use with hydrogen (a combination of GAR and PAS 4444).

Our PAS 4444 standard supplies guidance on developing and building hydrogen-fired gas appliances that are either purpose-built to use hydrogen energy or are designed to be converted to use hydrogen. It covers the functional specification of the appliance, including specific advice on demonstrating safety and including worst-case conditions to stress the appliance above what it is likely to experience in normal service.
