ISO 50001 or ISO 50005: which is right for you?

There are two core standards that support the implementation of an EnMS. Both have the same goal of helping your organization continually improve energy efficiency, but they allow you to approach this goal in different ways.

ISO 50005 (free)

This standard is particularly suited to small and medium size organizations who are getting started with energy efficiency.

Enables a phased approach to implementation, giving organizations more flexibility over the time and money they invest in their EnMS while still making energy savings.

Allows you to identify and prioritise quick wins for high-impact energy saving measures.

Organizations cannot get certified for meeting the requirements of this standard but full implementation will help to prepare you for ISO 50001 compliance.

ISO 50001

Suitable for all kinds of businesses, from SMEs through to multinational corporations.

Supports a systematic, globally recognized best practice approach to implementing an EnMS.

Provides a shortlist of activities for establishing policies, processes and specific energy-tasks to meet your organization’s energy objectives.

Once your organization has met the requirements of the standard, it can apply for certification, which may help it meet regulations and unlock new tender opportunities.
