Trade security programmes are designed to enhance the security of international trade. Member organizations map their supply chains, assess security risk, and comply with a set of minimum-security requirements, primarily related to securing international shipments against tampering. Becoming a certified member allows the organization to benefit from reduced inspections at international borders, priority processing following border closures, and access to customs resources.
Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (CTPAT) was developed by US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in 2001 to enhance the security of imported cargo.
CBP recognizes the trade security programmes of several other countries allowing members to recognize benefits around the globe. Mutually recognized programmes include the EU Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) and Partner in Protection (PIP) programs.
