BSI welcomes the UK Government’s Net Zero Review as a pathway to a sustainable future

    January 16, 2023

BSI, the global standards organization and national standards body, today welcomes the publication of the Independent Review of Net Zero by the Rt Hon Chris Skidmore MP and urges organizations to build on its momentum towards a sustainable future.

Commenting on the review, Scott Steedman, Director-General Standards, BSI, said:

“We welcome today’s review and the acknowledgement of the importance of standards in policy design, including reference to BSI in the context of our global leadership in the development of standards to support emerging technologies and our role in leading international collaboration on landmark projects such as the Net Zero Guidelines, published at COP 27.

“We are delighted that the review specifically mentions standards and their important role in accelerating the adoption of innovation by government and industry and the net zero transition.

“It is crucial for organizations to build on the momentum of this review, use standards more strategically as part of their transition planning and continue to innovate and accelerate change towards a sustainable future for the long-term benefit of all.”

    Notes to Editors:

From the report, pg. 284, 1103 states: The UK’s global leadership on standards can help facilitate global cooperation on emerging technologies. Standards are crucial to the net zero transition, ensuring new forms of energy generation and low-carbon technologies can be integrated into the grid, are interoperable, digitally-enabled, safe and secure by design. Globally accepted standards can also provide rigour and credibility to green claims and accelerate the adoption of innovation. BSI, the UK’s national standards body, is a leading member of the ‘International Organization for Standardization’ and has led a number of international efforts on net zero, e.g. the new international Net Zero Guidelines at COP27.
