IATF 16949 is an ISO technical specification that corresponds to existing US, German, French and Italian standards for automotive quality systems in the global automotive industry. The standard was published in October 2016 and replaces the ISO/TS 16949 standard. The standard describes the quality system requirements for the design, development, production, installation and maintenance of automotive related products.
ISO/TS 16949 was developed by the industry itself: the International Automotive Task Force (IATF) formulated the standard to drive improvements in the supply chain and in the certification process. In fact, certification under this specification is mandatory for most of the leading car manufacturers in order to continue doing business.
IATF 16949 is relevant to all companies in the automotive supply chain, from small manufacturers to multi-location multinationals, anywhere in the world. However, the standard only applies to those locations where production or service parts for the OEM (original equipment manufacturer) market are produced.
Organizations seeking to enter the automotive market must wait to be placed on a customer's list of potential suppliers to the automotive industry before they can be certified under this specification.
