The UKCA (UK Conformity Assessment) marking will be required for many products placed o the market in Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales). It covers most products that had previously requires CE marking.
The UKCA mark came into force on 1 Jan 2021. However, in the view of latest Government announcement, majority of manufacturers will have up until 31 December 2024 to obtain UKCA mark if they wish to keep trading in Great Britain. Detailed information on new deadlines to apply UKCA on products are expected to be published shortly.
At BSI we are able to work with you under our approved body status (0086) to achieve your Certification for UKCA.
The Need to Act now:
The UK Conformity Assessed (UKCA) marking has been introduced as part of the UK’s own robust regulatory framework. It shows that products comply with our product safety regulations which are designed to protect consumers.
However, given the difficult economic conditions created by post-pandemic shifts in demand and supply, alongside Putin’s war in Ukraine and the associated high energy prices, the government does not want to burden business with the requirement to meet the original (31 December 2022) deadline.
The government will continue to recognise the CE marking for 2 years, therefore allowing businesses until 31 December 2024 to prepare for the UKCA marking. Businesses can also use the UKCA marking, giving them flexibility to choose which marking to apply.
If you already have your CE certification with BSI, we can work with you to achieve your UKCA mark. Currently from a technical perspective, the requirements between UKCA and CE marking remain the same, for the time being. This means we can use the test data, and supporting technical file documentation you have provided for CE to achieve your UKCA mark, performing some additional work to ensure all conformity assessment procedures for the UKCA are met.
You can have a dual CE and UKCA Technical File with the following changes implemented:
- Ensure the Technical File reflects that it is for both CE and UKCA throughout.
- A Declaration of Conformity is required for CE and a UK Declaration of Conformity is required for UKCA.
- Marking – to encompass both CE and UKCA within the technical file.
- User Information Documentation – to include both CE and UKCA.
If you also have a Module D or C2 Certificate with BSI for CE, then we will review this Certification and ensure all surveillance visits or testing is up to date, to issue the necessary UKCA Module D or C2, we will not require any additional test reports or extra surveillance visits and going forward we can combine CE and UKCA audits together.
If you currently have your CE certification with another EU27 notified body, we can still assist you to achieve your UKCA.
- We will need to review your UKCA technical file, and test reports and as long as they are satisfactory, current to the product and from a reputable test laboratory, ideally with ISO 17025 accreditation and the product meets with one of the ‘designated’ standards, we will be able to work with you to achieve your UKCA with BSI.
- If you have an existing Module C2 or D for on-going, we will also need to review your last surveillance audit reports for Module D or test reports for Module C2 applications. These must be less than 12 months and have been used to support your existing CE marking. As long as these are valid and satisfactory, we can use them to set up the UKCA Module C2 or D Certificate, so not extra testing or surveillance visits will be required at this stage, but we will need to set the on-going surveillance using BSI assessors for Module D audits or test houses for Module C2 testing going forward.
