The popularity of IoT connected devices and smart homes has never been greater, with more and more smart technology prevalent in our everyday lives.
IoT (Internet of Things) refers to objects that are connected to the internet and/or a network where devices communicate to one another such as smart speakers, camera enabled doorbells and wearable fitness trackers.
This interactive technology has now developed within the fenestration industry and one of the latest advances is smart windows.
One of the biggest influences driving the development of this technology is the growing demand for greater energy efficiency within our homes. This has come from both European political directives to reduce energy consumptions and emissions, and the UK’s smart-meter mission, alongside the growing implementation of smart homes.*
Smart window technology
So, how can a window be ‘smart’?
One method is the use of solar cells, fitted on windows, walls or roofs, which would allow the home owner to lower their energy bills and increase efficiency through smart energy storage and distribution around the home.**
Smart window technology is also being used to improve the wellbeing of people within buildings who spend 90% of their life indoors and have developed health risks like asthma as a result of this behaviour.
One of the ways market leaders are tackling these issues is by creating technology that can control the air quality of rooms through IoT processes.
For example, Anderson windows can open and close windows through sensor technology to improve the air ventilation of a room.
Inwido reports that by 2027, 1 in 4 homes will be fitted with smart technology to enhance the security and energy efficiency of homes.**
Now is the time for manufacturers and fabricators to understand their worth to maximize future profits and performance. However, as the market currently lacks clear best practice and standards for IoT, it’s important to consider the credibility of IoT products.
