This 2-day course is designed to equip professionals with the critical knowledge and competencies required to develop a comprehensive carbon management plan. Leveraging science-based methodologies for the reduction and removal of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, the course considers emerging and predicted climatic conditions, to ensure the plan is robust, well-resourced, and employs the full support of top management, facilitating effective and efficient implementation.
How will I benefit?
By attending the course, you will benefit by:
- Enhancing your understanding of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, climate change, and associated environmental, social and economic impacts, enabling informed decision-making
- Gaining clarity on the resources, management support, and competence required, to successfully implement a carbon management plan
- Achieving consensus and clarity on the scope of your organization's carbon management plan, ensuring efficient and effective implementation
- Strengthening resilience against the impacts of climate change by identifying and mitigating risks associated with it
- Improving transparency and credibility by selecting and adhering to the most appropriate standard for preparing and reporting GHG emissions
- Fostering commitment and leadership from top management, in addressing GHG emissions, facilitating progress towards reduction, removal, and climate change adaptation goals
- Developing a comprehensive plan to achieve effective carbon reduction and mitigation, providing a roadmap for sustainable operations
- Recognizing the advantages of integrating GHG management into an established and certified management system, enhancing overall organizational performance and credibility
What will I gain?
Upon successful completion, you’ll be awarded an internationally recognized BSI Training Academy certificate.
Who should attend?
Anyone who wants to or is required to calculate, report, reduce, mitigate, check and verify their organization’s GHG emissions and adapt to future climate conditions. This can include many disciplines, job roles and functions. Some examples include job roles and functions in energy, environmental, and sustainability management, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), climate change specialist/officer/programme advisor and champions.
This training is designed from the perspective of organizations implementing a carbon management plan in their processes. External consultants and product/service providers can also gain value from the training.
What will I learn?
By attending this course, you will be able to:
- Outline the impact of climate change and the role of organizations to mitigate and adapt to it
- Define and develop a framework to implement a carbon management plan and obtain top management buy-in
- Determine a suitable GHG reporting boundary; taking into account emission scopes and life cycle perspective
- Plan data collection and calculate GHG emissions
- Define and support the formation and establishment of an implementation team
- Describe the resources, support, and competence required for the implementation team
- Outline the key differences between ISO 14064-1 vs GHG Protocol
- Integrate ISO 14064-1 requirements into related management systems, such as ISO 14001 and ISO 50001
- Establish the role of top management and evaluate their commitment to carbon management planning
- Identify and plan a range of actions to mitigate GHG emissions, including GHG reductions, GHG removals, and actions by others
- Develop credible baseline scenarios to demonstrate reduction and removal of future GHG emissions
- Identify and assess climate change risks in order to determine climate action (mitigation vs adaptation)
- Document and assess the effectiveness of a carbon management plan
What is included?
Organizations increasingly need to report their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, identify and implement measures to reduce their carbon footprints, apply adaptation techniques to prepare for emerging climatic conditions, and actively manage such activities to bring about climate-change-busting actions.
This course focuses on the application of related standards, including ISO 14064, ISO 14068, and ISO 14090, that have been developed specifically to help organizations manage their GHG emissions, and address the risks associated with climate change. Specifically:
- ISO 14064-1:2018: Specification with guidance at the organization level for quantification and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions and removals
- ISO 14068-1:2023: Climate change management – Transition to net zero, Part 1: Carbon neutrality
ISO 14090:2019: Adaptation to climate change – Principles, requirements and guidelines
Prerequisites
Delegates should complete the ISO 14064-1 requirements training or have equivalent knowledge and skills in quantifying of GHG emissions and opportunities for reduction/removals, before attending this training.
It will also be useful for delegates to have an awareness of relevant standards before attending the course.
