Answering your questions about validation and verification assessments

In addition to schemes locally available, we provide validation and verification for the following globally:

The following are the key stages and activities undertaken:
1. Application – The applicant provides claim details, objectives, criteria, scope, and assurance levels.
2. Planning – BSI experts review, analyze, and assess risks to develop detailed plans.
3. Execution – The team conducts validation or verification through physical and remote site visits.
4. Findings – Misstatements or non-conformances must be resolved if they materially impact the claim.
5. Conclusions – A final opinion is formed; all material issues must be addressed for a positive opinion.
6. Independent review – Ensures minimal risk before issuing the opinion.
7. Opinion and report – The final opinion is issued, completing the process.
There are two assurance levels that are typically defined by the scheme or program used.

Reasonable assurance /High level: Provides a high but not absolute level of assurance, reducing verification risk to an acceptably low level. Sufficient evidence confirms that the subject matter conforms in all material respects with criteria. The opinion is positive, e.g., "The GHG statement is materially correct and fairly represents the data."

Limited assurance/Moderate level: Provides a lower level of assurance with higher risk. Evidence supports the plausibility of the claim. The opinion is negative, e.g., "No evidence suggests the GHG statement is materially incorrect or misrepresented."
Materiality level is usually determined by the scheme or programme used for the validation or verification.

Materiality can be qualitative, or a quantitative threshold or cut-off point above which misstatements, individually or when aggregated with other misstatements, are considered material by the intended user.

A misstatement is an error, omission, misreporting or misrepresentation in the sustainability statement.
The scheme or programme can require the types of opinions and reports to be issued and the terminology may differ but typically there are three types:

Unmodified opinion – where there are no misstatements, non-conformances or caveats that the intended user needs to be aware of in relation to the statement/claim.

Modified opinion – where misstatements, non-conformances or caveats that the intended user needs to be made aware of exist but are not material, in relation to the statement/claim.

Adverse opinion - where the existence of material misstatements or non-conformances are identified, or insufficient information of evidence has been supplied to enable BSI to conclude that no material misstatements or non-conformances exist.
Both are processes designed to provide assurance about a claim, or statement or assertion. Validation is the process of confirming that a claim about a future outcome is reasonable and supported by objective evidence.

It ensures that the assumptions, methods, and limitations used to make the claim are sound and meet the necessary requirements for its intended purpose, whereas verification is the process of confirming that a claim based on past data is accurate and meets specific requirements. It involves reviewing evidence to ensure the information is correct, reliable, and aligns with the necessary standards.
