Innovating Carbon Neutrality: Arup's Implementation of PAS 2080

A strategic approach to achieving carbon neutrality through PAS 2080:2023 standards for the built environment.

    Testimonial

“PAS 2080 promotes collaborative working and systems-thinking to make rapid change happen and centre carbon reduction in everyone’s decision-making.”

    The people

Impact through advice and solutions for built environment clients

Arup is a multinational professional services business that provides design, engineering, architecture, planning, and advisory services for the built environment.

Arup is a sustainable development consultancy determined to contribute meaningfully to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, creating shared value for clients and communities while safeguarding the planet. It has made several global sustainability commitments, not least on decarbonization.

    The challenge

Tackling climate change: Arup's role in reducing infrastructure carbon emissions

In 2013, HM Treasury published the Infrastructure Carbon Review, showing the sector accounted for over half of the UK's emissions and faced significant challenges to meet net-zero targets.

PAS 2080 was created in 2016 as the first global standard for reducing infrastructure carbon emissions in response to carbon management challenges. It spans the entire value chain for lower carbon and costs. A 2021 review noted progress but urged faster action. The 2023 update broadens PAS 2080 to include the entire built environment, aiming for whole-life carbon reduction and net-zero alignment. Arup co-authored the initial creation and this revision, emphasizing the urgency of carbon reduction in the industry.

    Our solution

BSI facilitated the development of PAS 2080 in 2016 and its revision in 2023

To achieve PAS 2080:2023 verification, Arup underwent a thorough independent assessment by BSI, with experienced auditors ensuring the consultancy's processes met all standards.

Arup recognized that its carbon impact through its projects and clients is more than 350 times greater than the corporate carbon footprint it’s required to report, as well as the importance of BSI verification to PAS 2080. It helps Arup support its clients, partners, and supply chain to collaboratively reduce carbon across global building and infrastructure projects. Its framework systematically integrates carbon into decision-making with everyone in the value chain at all work stages, specifically requirements for the management of whole-life carbon.

Empowering change: The benefits of Arup's commitment to decarbonization

BSI verification against PAS 2080:2023 helps Arup and its project partners to:
