What does BSI Flex 1890 v5.0:2023-04 cover?

BSI Flex 1890 v5.0 includes definition of 103 key terms and 60 most commonly used abbreviations for the connected and automated mobility (CAM) sector, focused on those relating to vehicles and associated technologies.

Why is it needed?

The vocabulary defines terms, abbreviations and acronyms related to the connectivity and automation of roadgoing, land-based vehicles and their users. The latest version includes new terms for additional concepts and reflects the Law Commission’s latest recommendations on remote driving.

Flex 1890 has been developed via a dynamic and iterative standardization approach, called BSI Flex. This approach permits a rapid response to industry changes and can result in the publication of several versions a year. Therefore, by its nature, the CAV vocabulary will change from time to time with subsequent iteration.

BSI Flex 1890 v5.0 has undergone technical review, a consensus building process and public consultation. All subsequent versions will go through this review process.


BSI is also committed to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, with this BSI Flex contributing to Goal 9 on building resilient infrastructure, promoting inclusive and sustainable industrialization and fostering innovation.
