What is the UKCA mark?

The UKCA (UK Conformity Assessment) mark is the new UK product marking that will be required for certain products being placed on the market in Great Britain (England, Wales and Scotland). It covers most products that previously required the CE mark.

It will not be recognized in the EU market. Products that require CE marking will still need a CE marking to be sold in the EU.

What is the Measuring Instruments Directive about?

Directive 2014/32/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council on the harmonisation of the laws of the Member States relating to the making available on the market of Measuring Instruments came into force from 20 April 2016 and replaces Directive 2004/22/EC.

This Directive implements the text of EU Decision No 768/2008/EC and makes reference to Regulation (EC) No 765/2008 on accreditation and market surveillance.

The Directive has been implemented in the UK as Statutory Instrument 2016 No, 1153 – Weights & Measure, The Measuring Instruments Regulation 2016.

All instruments placed on the market after 20 April 2016 must comply with the requirements in the Directive & Regulations listed above.

To display the CE marking under this Directive, you must prove the products are durable, reliable, suitable for intended use and sensitive to the required measurement with repeatable results.

Who is the Directive for?

This Directive is for manufacturers of Measuring Instruments,, Authorised Representative, Distributor, Importer who are wishing to place  products on the market or put into service  in the European Union. Once you meet the requirements of the Directive you will be able to apply CE marking to the products.

What does the Measuring Instruments Directive cover?

Various measuring instruments are covered by the Directive and they fall under the following headings:

MI-001: Water meters

MI-002: Gas meters and volume conversion devices

MI-003: Active electrical energy meters

MI-004: Thermal energy meters

MI-005: Measuring systems for the continuous and dynamic measurement of quantities of liquids other than water

MI-006: Automatic weighing instruments

MI-007:  Taximeters

MI-008: Material measures

MI-009: Dimensional measuring instruments

MI-010: Exhaust gas analysers
