Transforming Best Practice for Battery Manufacturing

The connected digital world is driving unprecedented demand for batteries. The time is right for a considered, end-to-end review of the sector.

    Faraday Battery Challenge (FBC)

The FBC represents a Government investment of £541 million spread over eight years, sharing funds with innovative UK companies.

FBC aims to scale-up the development of battery technology in the UK and deliver world-class capability. It’s focused on developing cost-effective, high-performance, durable, safe and recyclable batteries for a growing market.

    The Challenge

Helping UK businesses navigate the challenges of rapid growth

With the demand for batteries increasing exponentially and sustainability more central than ever, the UK Government identified a timely moment to rethink standards and best practice.

The acceleration of the market highlighted pressing challenges critical to the government and the sector – around health, safety and environmental considerations.

The need was identified to develop and codify good practice to fill in key knowledge gaps and respond to questions seen as critical by the UK Battery Industrialization Centre and UK industry. Consultation would include companies and stakeholders already associated with the FBC, and attract new ones.

    The Solution

    Aligning sustainability with standardization

A Standards Landscape report looked at relevant published standards and identified gaps, leading to the development of three Publicly Available Specifications (PASs) and a strategic future roadmap.

Facilitated workshops with industry and government stakeholders helped develop detailed scopes for the three PASs and secured industry involvement in the PAS and roadmap development process.

The standards focus on different parts of the value chain, including health, safety and environmental considerations for battery manufacture in components, and vehicle design.

They include consideration of end of life, second life and recycling aspects; they also form the basis of a wider, long-term standardization to battery manufacturing worldwide.
