7 March 2025: BSI is partnering with Thai Industrial Standards Institute (TISI) to deepen collaboration on international standards, helping to accelerate innovation, support trade and boost economic growth in both countries.
The collaboration, for which a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) is signed through a virtual ceremony, seeks to promote knowledge-sharing and expertise, recognising the important role played by common frameworks and standards in improving trust, quality and safety for the long-term benefit of individuals, organizations and societies.
The partnership also aims to enhance communication and foster cooperation and collaboration between experts, businesses, stakeholders and government in standards development and a digital future encompassing a new smart world of standards, conformity assessment and capacity building.
This work is supported by the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and the Department for Business and Trade through the British Embassy Bangkok, to promote cooperation over standards in support of trade discussions between the UK and Thailand governments, with this year marking the 170th anniversary of UK-Thai diplomatic relations.
Standards is one of the priority areas identified in the Enhanced Trade Partnership (ETP) Agreement signed by the UK and Thailand governments in September 2024 to deepen bilateral economic ties, reduce trade barriers and create more business opportunities.
Dr Scott Steedman, Director-General, Standards at BSI, said: "I am delighted that BSI and TISI have partnered for international standards collaboration. This marks another important milestone in the long relationship between our countries and a new chapter in our relationship. I am confident that we will work together in our shared mission to inspire trust and safety in our societies, companies and industries, and to accelerate progress towards a fair society and sustainable world.”
Mr Wanchai Phanomchai, Secretary General of Thai Industrial Standards Institute (TISI), said: “TISI and BSI share a common vision to promote high-quality standards that enhance industrial competitiveness, consumer protection and sustainable development. By working together, we can align our efforts with global best practices, facilitate trade and drive innovation that benefits both our industries and societies.”
Mr Ben Morley, Department for Business and Trade Country Director, British Embassy in Bangkok, said: “The UK remains committed to supporting Thailand in fostering a regulatory environment that encourages trade & investment, and sustainable economic growth, at the same time, ensuring consumer’s safety. The MoU between BSI and TISI marks an important step in aligning our standards and regulatory frameworks which I strongly believe it helps businesses operate more smoothly and with greater confidence in both markets. And I wish it will bring greater prosperity, better standards, and closer relationship to us all.”
