Revised specification designed to improve waste management

London, 11 February 2025 – BSI has today announced the revision of its waste resource management specification, PAS 402 – a move that aims to better facilitate the circular economy, while enabling businesses to improve their waste management processes.

The revised standard is designed to help waste management organizations demonstrate a high standard of performance through a particular framework. It aims to support businesses to improve the quality of recyclate, reduce compliance costs and risks and streamline data reporting.

The updated document PAS 402:2025 Waste resource management – Performance Reporting – Specification aims to provide waste management organizations with guidelines for performance reporting. The reporting framework outlines key areas of focus, such as landfill diversion and material recovery, to demonstrate progress and performance. It is applicable to all organizations that process industrial, commercial or household waste at a transfer station, treatment facility or disposal site.

Sebastiaan Van Dort, Director of Sustainability and Energy at BSI, said "Working towards a circular economy, involving efficient and accessible disposal of waste and waste flows being turned into inputs for further production, can limit society’s impact on finite resources and bring opportunities for positive environmental and economic impacts.

The revised PAS 402:2025 specification is designed to offer a critical step in advancing waste resource management and supporting the transition to a more circular economy. This updated standard provides organizations with the opportunity to build trust by enhancing operational performance, improving recyclate quality, and streamlining compliance processes. By working collaboratively with industry partners, we aim to not only help businesses meet regulations, but also accelerate progress towards a sustainable world."
