BSI publishes global standard to unlock innovation excellence

26 November 2024 – A new framework designed to guide businesses to introduce and implement new ideas, processes, products, or services that improve an organization’s overall efficiency, productivity, or culture has been published by UK national standards body BSI.

The innovation management systems standard (BS EN ISO 56001), designed to propel organizations of any size, type or origin into the future, specifies the requirements for implementing and continually improving a management system for innovation efforts in an organization.

The aim of adopting an innovation management system is to improve an organization’s ability to adapt to change. The new standard provides a solid foundation for innovation to thrive by establishing a robust and structured framework that enhances and nurtures innovation.

The standard was published to coincide with Innovation Day 2024, an event at the Design Museum hosted by BSI and InnovateUK which brought together over 170 attendees from the innovation management community to share learnings from experts about the standard’s eight core principles. From how the culture of an organization can support openness to change to strategies for managing uncertainties and risk, the principles provide a systematic framework to foster a culture of innovation.

Dan Purtell, Group Innovation Director, BSI said: “Businesses that have the ability to innovate by implementing new ideas, processes, products, or services are well placed to flourish in the future. Successful innovation management can help enable sustained competitiveness, productivity and growth for both businesses and the UK economy. The new standard is designed to support organizations to embed effective innovation management practices, helping them to save cost and reduce risk ultimately enabling them to play a role in accelerating progress towards a better society and a sustainable world.
