BSI opens the Standards Experience, a new exhibition for the public to explore how consensus standards are made and learn how to participate in shaping standards for the future
The BSI exhibition at the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), One Great George Street presents a completely new perspective on the concept of standards, BSI’s work as the national standards body and how people can get involved in shaping best practice. The experience uses custom installations to engage visitors with questions and ideas.
The BSI Standards Experience has opened in the library of the ICE at One Great George Street, Westminster. The exhibition has been created by BSI in its role as the UK national standards body. It is free to view and takes visitors on an immersive journey through a series of installations to discover the power of human interaction, conversation and collaboration and how consensus is the key to create standards that will benefit individuals, communities and organizations and to support governments all over the world.
Founded by the ICE in 1901, BSI became the world’s first national standards body. For 120 years BSI has helped to improve the quality and safety of products, services and systems by enabling the creation of standards and encouraging their use. BSI publishes over 2,700 standards annually following a consensus-based collaborative approach, engaging with industry and academic experts, government bodies, trade associations, consumers and other representatives to develop best practice standards for use by industry and government.
Visitors can follow standards activities to discover how they can become involved in standards making. Whilst there and walking through the interactive displays, they will be invited to consider topical issues and to share their views through a web-based app on a wide range of subjects, including how standards can be used as a tool to address the sustainable development goals, how they safely manage their personal data, and what the future of work should look like.
Scott Steedman, Director-General, Standards at BSI said: “In BSI’s 120th anniversary year, we warmly welcome visitors to explore the power of consensus in shaping best practice at the Standards Experience at One Great George Street. I am very grateful to the Institution of Civil Engineers, with whom BSI has a long and historic relationship, for the opportunity to create this new public exhibition. In our role as the UK national standards body we want to show how standards underpin everything and how standards making has evolved to address the global challenges of today on such important topics as diversity and inclusion, consumer protection, data privacy, sustainability, the digital economy and the workplace of the future.”
