The public consultation process for the first draft standardization document from the Energy Smart Appliances (ESA) programme is now open until 2 September.
BSI, in its role as the UK National Standards Body, is seeking consultation from experts in the energy and manufacturing industries. Experts can register their comments online at: http://standardsdevelopment.bsigroup.com/projects/2019-01576
The ESA programme is sponsored by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and the Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) to facilitate the uptake of safe, secure and interoperable ESAs. This includes electric vehicle (EV) chargepoints, for the active management of demand on the electricity network like demand side response (DSR) management.
The first deliverable from the programme is a fast-tracked standardization document, known as a Publicly Available Specification (PAS) 1878:2021 Energy smart appliances – Classification – Specification.
It is intended to specify the requirements and criteria that a device needs to meet in order to perform and be classified as an ESA. It defines the attributes, functions and performance criteria for ESAs, and specifies how compliance with these can be verified. This PAS is intended to be used by manufacturers and maintainers of ESAs.
Sebastian Van Dort, Associate Director of Energy Standards at BSI said: “Since the government set out its ambitious plans to make the transition to a smart, low carbon, flexible energy system, consumers have become more directly involved in managing demand in the electricity system through smart appliances that react to the availability of electricity. Given the fast-moving environment, ESA guidance on principles of interoperability, data privacy, grid stability and cyber security are becoming more important. This is why we are encouraging everyone to engage and share their feedback on the first draft standardization document.”
The PAS is being produced by a steering group made-up of representatives from organizations in the UK EAS eco-system, including manufacturing, energy and technology professionals.
The second deliverable from the programme, PAS 1879: Framework for demand side response (DSR) – Demand side response operation – Code of Practice, is due for consultation in Autumn 2020.
