Pioneering Sustainable Event Management with ISO 20121

In 2024, BSI hosted the annual International Electrotechnical Commission’s General Meeting, the first of our events to be certified to ISO 20121.

Leading by example to influence sustainable change

At BSI, our Knowledge Solutions division delivers approximately 100 online and in-person events every year, which are attended by over 7,000 people.

In 2024, we also had the honour of hosting the International Electrotechnical Commission’s General Meeting. From the outset, we wanted sustainability to be integral to the way we planned and delivered this event, and ISO 20121 helped us achieve this.

    The Challenge

Embedding sustainability into our event management processes

At BSI, impact for a fair society and a sustainable world is at the heart of what we do. To showcase this, we wanted our end-to-end delivery of the IEC GM - and for future events - to be sustainable.

From the very start of the process, we wanted to consider the holistic impact of planning and delivering the International Electrotechnical Commission’s General Meeting on areas such as venues, suppliers, logistics, stakeholders, local economy, and wider environmental issues.

As an organization, we also wanted to encourage wider adoption of sustainable event practices. We had the IEC GM certified to ISO 20121 to show leadership in this area and inspire other organizations to do the same.

    The Solution

Implementing an ISO 20121 event sustainability management system

At BSI, we chose to implement ISO 20121 to help us meet our event goals and ensure a comprehensive approach to sustainability was taken.

Implementing the standard was a collective decision led by the IEC GM Project Manager, with vital support from BSI's senior management.

Aligning our event operations to the ISO 20121 requirements improved planning processes, enhanced stakeholder engagement on sustainability, and influenced delegates’ sustainable choices.

As BSI’s first ISO 20121 certified event, it sets a precedent for future industry events and showcases the power of standards in making a tangible difference.

    Our success at a glance

ISO 20121 was an invaluable tool. It helped us address the environmental, economic, and social impacts of hosting the IEC GM.
