The new EN 298:2022 standard for Australian certification

EN 298:2012 was superseded in November 2022 and replaced with EN 298:2022. Being the reference standard to assess programmable electronic systems under AS 4625, burner controls certified to AS 4625 will also be affected. As required in the GTRC rules, the affected certificates shall be upgraded to the new standard within two years from publication (November 2024).

In addition, the changes in EN 298 will affect appliances incorporating an automatic burner control, as AS/NZS 5263.0 calls for AS 4625 and EN 298 for the evaluation of automatic burner control with a programmable electronic system. Hence the appliance manufacturers need to ensure their suppliers are responding to this change.

As the certificate holder, you should review the changes to establish what impact this will have on your products within a reasonable time. We recommend that you complete this review and develop an action plan to ensure your products continue to comply with latest requirements in EN 298:2022.

Manufacturers may choose to have this review performed independently by a Conformity Assessment Body (CAB) such as BSI, and our extensive experience in testing and certifying against both versions of the standards may save significant time in the process.
