COP26 - the UN’s Climate Change Conference - is being held in Glasgow from Oct 31 – November 12, 2021. For nearly three decades the UN has been bringing together almost every country on earth for global climate summits – called COPs – which stands for ‘Conference of the Parties’. In that time climate change has gone from being a fringe issue to a global priority. This year will be the 26th annual summit – giving it the name COP26.
COP21 took place in Paris in 2015 and was the birthplace of the Paris Agreement, in which every country agreed to work together to limit global average temperature increase to well below 2 degrees, aiming for 1.5 degrees. Countries also committed to implementing measures to adapt to the impacts of a changing climate and to make financing available to deliver on these goals.
Countries also agreed that every five years they would come back with an updated plan that would reflect their highest possible ambition at that time. These Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) allow transparent assessment of progress towards meeting the goals set in the Paris Agreement.
In the COP26, nations are working to assess progress and the gaps between their previous commitments and current NDCs. World leaders was in Scotland, alongside tens of thousands of negotiators, government representatives, businesses and citizens for twelve days of talks and negotiations, laying out critical next steps for battling climate change.
